Always a drama...

So, yesterday was pretty traumatic for my son Aaron.

Joe is in town, so I sent him to go pick Aaron up after school so he wouldn't have to walk home. Joe called saying he couldn't find him. All of a sudden my doorbell rang. Aaron was standing on my porch and my neighbor told me she found Aaron crying on the corner saying he was just chased by someone with a knife!

What?

So I called Joe and said Aaron was already home and we needed to talk. Apparently, while Aaron was walking home, some older kid said "I want to kill you with my knife" and chased Aaron down the street trying to stab him. Needless to say, it was pretty hard to hear my six year old tell me that other kids wanted to hurt him like that. I felt so bad for him. tears...

We called the principal and told her the situation, then Joe and I knocked on a couple of our neighborhood kids' doors to get to the bottom of the story.

ANYWAYS, this morning, we went in and talked with the principal. Joe was pretty stern saying this was pretty serious and he wanted to make sure the kid's parents were aware of this behavior, and appropriate actions were in place. Also, we wanted to make sure this would not happen again. The principal had investigated this too, and found out (from the other witnesses) that there was no knife involved, the perp. just pretended to have one. I totally would have backed down at that moment - in fact, I dont think I said a word the whole time we were there. HOWEVER, Joe communicated that it didn't matter - if he were to walk into a store pretending to have a knife and threatening something, he would wind up in jail for a few years...

SOOOOO... Aaron is now at school. I feel bad for him. But I also wonder, what would happen if it were the other way around? I would HOPE he wouldn't chase some younger kid around threatening him like that. Were we overreacting going to the principal like that? Should we now expect the kid (who is prob in a lot of trouble now) to be even more angry at Aaron? what to do... what to do...

Oh, my goodness. You know me, I over react on everything and I would have freaked out too! Poor Aaron. I think what Joe did was good. The kid needs to know how serious that was and it was not "funny". We missed you yesterday. I took Becky down to my old stomping grounds. You missed out!, but we still love you!

that is crazy! poor aaron. i think you and joe did the right thing, too. you can't take chances when your kids are involved.

Em-

Hate to say it, but the kid won't even get a slap on the wrist. Don't worry about the other kid; worry about your own.

Experience has taught me schools, police, law enforcement, etc. always go too easy & people have to mulitiple offend to get any punishment. Maybe I'm jaded because Bart is a probation officer & I talk to teachers in the lounges when I substitute...but, from all I've seen: now that there is no corporal punishment (the belt), there are no effective consequences in schools. Schools are too afraid of lawsuits to take any action.

Joe was right in what he said & you did the right thing. Always push for your rights!

Let me just say "ditto" to Amy's comment. She stole the word's right out of my mouth.
I hope Aaron is okay.

No, you were right to see the principal and Joe was totally right in what he said! Aaron has a right to walk home without being threatened.

What a little twerp that kid was!

At least you both stayed calm...I would have been waiting for the kid the next day with a few choice threats of my own...okay, maybe not, but I do freak out when people hurt or scare my kids!

I don't think you over reacted at all. With all the violence happening at schools these days, one can never be too careful. Go Joe!

I feel so bad for Aaron, that might take awhile to get over. I don't think you over reacted and Valerie is right "Go Joe".

You totally did the right thing. And I would be scared if joe came into my office and was having words with me! (Not that he's scary, but he's someone I'd take seriously!) I would definitely go knock on the kids door and have a chit chat with his ma and pa, since it didn't happen AT school and instead in your neighborhood... the little twirp.

You did the right thing. An older kid picking on a little kid is one thing but threatening someone with a knife is totally different. I feel so bad for Aaron and the pure fear he felt as he tried to escape the situation. Hopefully, the kid won't retaliate on Aaron at a later date but if he has good parents that punished him accordingly and the school officials doing the same we can pray that he and his ilk will leave Aaron alone. I'm sorry you had to go through something like that.

You 100% did the right thing and good for Joe for not backing down. People pretend all the time to have a bomb or a gun and they still get busted so that kid should get his booty busted too!!! It is hard to watch your kids go through stuff like that. Poor little dude.

Her husband is out of town alot because he travels the country telling how he came back from a grueling alcohol addiction. The best part of being on the road is the endless evenings in local bars and nightclubs...

I don't think you guys over reacted at all! I would have done the same thing. I hope this kids parents take it seriously and give him some serious consequences!
There was an older girl on Taylor's bus last year that was being verbally abusive to her and she kept coming home crying about it. On the 2nd or 3rd time I called the principal to let her know. The principal knew exactly who I was talking about and took action and the girl stopped! I was so happy that a stop was put to it!
