ER AGAIN!!!

So, guess where I was tonight?
the ER.
Ya, 2x in the same week! FUN TIMES!

Today started out ok. I got the kids off to school, Charity was dressed up for her halloween party... I even took a SHOWER!!! Nate and I went to Charity's preschool party. It was cute and fun. I took Charity home early, and went to the store and blockbuster, ran by the house to unload and grab food, then picked Aaron up (we had early release today) and took the kids to the park. I met a few girlfriends there, and all the kids played so well. The weather was perfect. Time to go home!

As I was putting Nate in the car, I noticed him kindof gagging on something - I figured it was a hair or something and he would work it out on on his own. He started crying, and was obviously in pain of some sort... We got home, I gave him a sippy and threw him in bed. He screamed. This was about 1:30. He screamed some more. He wouldnt fall asleep. ok, I figured he must have something in his throat. I looked, didnt see anything, and tried to put him back to bed. He could breathe, and I thought he was fine. 3:00 approaches. Nate is STILL crying. I call a girlfriend, she says give him juice and tylonal, and he will be fine. He wouldnt drink the juice. I tried a different kind of juice... He is still screaming. Piano students at the door. I try putting nate down again. 10 mins into piano lesson, I said, um, can we just make it up tomorrow? Nate was obviously in too much pain, and screaming child doesnt help me as I tried to teach. I really think he has a problem, and must be in some real pain, and must have something in his throat (he was still kindof coughing/gagging - but he could still breathe and cry good)... So, I cancelled the rest of the afternoon piano lessons, and dropped my kids off at my giflriends house. Called joe - ARE YOU COMING HOME TONIGHT????... yes, thank goodness.

Ok, to make a long story short. After 2 hours at urgent care, I was sent to the real children's hospital (ya, i was just there 2 nights before). Nate had a shard of wood lodged in his throat. it was a splinter about 1/2 an inch long. The doctor at the real hospital took it out then had to monitor him to make sure his throat wouldnt start bleeding etc...

So, by 9 pm, we are FINALLY home, and Nate is on liquids for the next day or so. I feel so bad. I cant even imagine the pain he was in today. He had a splinter in his throat for about 6 hours before they got it out. Tues and Thurs night I was in that same ER. Different kids, but both had something down their throats. SERIOUSLY. The quarter incident I can laugh at. I can only cry about the splinter. (believe me the whole way from urgent care to the hospital i DID!) The lady at urgent care said i need to baby proof my home. IT IS BABY PROOF! how do you keep splinters out of your kids throats when they go to the park? Nate didnt even try to eat any woodchips - this one either blew into his mouth or got in there some other freakish way... I guess i just need to know how to keep your 6 year old from eating the quarters from his piggy bank?????

YOU POOR WOMAN!! I sure hope Joe is home to give you some time for yourself. That is such a freaky thing to have a splinter in his throat. Luckily for you he will not remember this. As far as Aaron swallowing a quarter, I think it happens to all of us. Your children are blessed to have you as their mother!

I am so sorry that I am LAUGHING at your Week!!! I feel so sad for Aaron and Nate.. how misserable to have to go to the Hospital... I HATE hospitals....
My Suggestion....
how to keep a 6 yr old from swallowing quarters... Keep the money in a jar in the kitchen out of reach... and put the kids MONEY in a bank account.
how to keep a baby from swallowing woodchips... maybe go back to the ER and ask for some of those Mouth and Nose guards the dr's wear during surgery... and put that over nates face while he is outside... It will prevent him from eating sand, bugs and even woodchips...
Glad Joe is finally coming home. HOPEFULLY he lets you have a break this weekend

Oh my gosh Em! I am so sorry!! Kids do the craziest things! I bet you are glad Joe is home now...he can do the next ER run!...Just kidding!
I tell ya you and I live the same lives. Awhile back I had to take Jack to the ER 2x in the same week both for 2 different head wounds. I tried the urgent care thing before the second trip like you did and got sent to the children's hospital. Ever since then I will go no where else! Even for stitches. You just never know with the Urgent Care what they will and wont treat. Phx Children's is so fast that it saves time just to go strait there even for the little things.
I hope Nate feels better real soon and that you don't beat yourself up over this one! You're great!

I have to start off by saying that I'm so sorry that Nate and you had to go through that, it always makes me sad when I hear about kids in the slightest bit of pain.

Ok, now that must have been some strong gust of wind to blow a woodchip into his mouth...are you SURE his hand didn't help it on its way up there?

I heard about this story from someone last night who is a friend of Ruth's, only they didn't know who you were. I had this feeling that it was you and Nate...so we called Ruth and sure enough, it was! So sorry to hear about what happened. Poor Nate! Let us know if we can help in any way.

Poor Nate! Man, that would hurt. Thank God for doctors and the convenience of having good ones when you need it. Now that I know that can happen, I'll be more vigilent on the playground when Adam's crawling around!

Oh that is just so sad! Poor little baby and poor you! Talk about freakish throat week! Hope your weekend is event free so you can relax and breath!

When it rains it pours! Let's pray these things don't come in three's (watch Charity like a hawk, lol!) Seriously though, you deserve a big ol' BREAK!

Isn't it amazinig what kind of predicaments kids can find themselves in? When we first got John I had the entire house cleared of any hazards...first thing he does is climb up on the piano and fell taco style behind the piano and the wall and got stuck?

P.S. Thanks for subbing for me last week...you're a peach!

Wow, amazing the things that happen to kids! I am so sorry that went through all that. Hopefully things calm down for you next week!

Oh my gosh, I feel for you! It's so hard to know sometimes what is wrong. I hate when people try to tell you obvious things, like to babyproof your house. WE are not idiot moms! My 18 month old can run really fast, especially away from me. I have had a couple times where he is out of my sight for 10 seconds, and he is literally far away and in some sort of danger. The worst part is that some old lady always finds him and then tells me that "I need to watch him better!" I don't need a lecture, I'm just trying to survive here! It's not like I wanted him to get lost!

Oh my gosh, Emily. CRAZY! I can't imagine having a splinter down my throat. Poor little guy! Poor you having to go to the ER again!

Emily are you sure you aren't doing these things to your children on purpose just to be able to post on your blog!? In all seriousness though, I felt really bad for your boy and for you, because I know if that were Chelsea in your situation she would be so sad that this happened. Good luck next week!

Emily, I just got done reading the blog about Courtney Flynn and was wondering how you know her? Reading the blog brought tears to my eyes, as I imagined the struggles they must be going through, I know I can't even fully imagine what that must be like.

are you freaking kidding!! I can't believe your life. All with out your hubby too. We'll I'm glad everyone is okay. Poor guy with the splinter, oh I just bet it was so painful. I'm really hoping your next post will have nothing to do with the ER, children putting things in their mouths or anything of the such....for your sake at least.

Aw, Em, you are so awesome to put up with all of that on your own. I'd be in pieces. I once dislocated Stephanie's elbow, and she was screaming and crying, and I knew she hurt, but I didn't know where, and she couldn't tell me, and I didn't know what to do, and we were in ID and had to go back to UT, and my parents didn't know what to do, and so we drove the whole way home with Stephanie in pain and miserable, and I just wanted to cry about it, b/c I didn't know what was wrong. Then the next day I was talking to my mom and she said that after we left my dad remembered that my sister's elbow used to come out a lot, and that the doctor told him that to fix it he had to turn her hand palm up and to bend it towards her shoulder until it popped back into place. So Steve did that with Steph, and she cried again, but it wasn't long and she was back to normal, and I still feel really bad about it even though it happened in March and she doesn't remember it at all.

wow, I hope next week goes better for you, a little less traumatic if nothing else! I hope Nate is feeling better, poor kiddo. And poor Mommy too, I hope things will slow down for you, enjoy your WEEKEND!
